This could lead up to a huge fight

The world of boxing has always been filled with rivalries, but the tension between Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis has recently reached a boiling point. The animosity between the two lightweight champions came to light during a recent interview on the Cigar Talk podcast hosted by Naji Chill.

During the interview, Stevenson, the WBC lightweight champion, opened up about the origins of their strained relationship and how it has evolved over time. Stevenson and Davis share a history that dates back to their amateur days. Although they were never close, there was mutual respect between them.

However, as Stevenson began racking up victories in the professional circuit, the dynamics shifted. According to Stevenson, the root cause of their fallout lies in the comparisons drawn between him and Davis. Stevenson claims that as his name started gaining traction and popularity, Davis’s attitude towards him changed.

“When I first was around the n**ga, he was showing a lot of love. And then once I became a threat, is where like everything switched over, once like people start talking about me and my name started getting bigger then it was like ‘I’ll go fight, I’ll get on Twitter’,” Stevenson said.

A new dynamic after this

The sudden change in Davis’s behavior left Stevenson taken aback. He initially believed that they were on good terms but gradually realized that Davis’s actions were driven by insecurity. “I think like in his brain, it’s just one person and nobody else could be up here too,” Stevenson stated.

Despite the ongoing tension, Stevenson has consistently pushed for a match with both the WBA and WBC lightweight titles on the line. However, Davis has repeatedly rejected the idea. Interestingly, a recent interview with Davis’s coach has introduced a new twist to the narrative, suggesting that a potential showdown might be on the horizon.

The boxing community is eagerly awaiting a resolution to this rivalry, and fans are hopeful that the two champions will finally face off in the ring. A match between Stevenson and Davis would not only settle their differences but also provide a thrilling spectacle for boxing enthusiasts worldwide.

Shakur Stevenson retained his title against late-replacement opponent Josh Padley at The Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on February 22. The native of Newark, NJ claimed the win by TKO, sending the British challenger to the canvas three times along the way.

Stevenson seemed in control throughout the fight, picking Padley apart. To his credit, Padley fought back, trying to land punches of his own. The 27-year-old, based in Houston, TX, floored his opponent for the final time with a right hand to the body, forcing Padley’s corner to throw in the towel in the last seconds of the ninth round.

With the victory, Shakur Stevenson made the second successful defense of his WBC lightweight title. The three-division world champion improved to 23-0, 11 KOs, and remained undefeated.

For Stevenson, the late change in opponent posed a potential risk—preparing for one fighter and facing another always introduces the challenge of adaptation. However, Stevenson’s adaptability and ring IQ quickly became evident as he adjusted seamlessly to the new threat in front of him.

The Fight:

From the opening bell, Shakur Stevenson took control of the fight. Using his speed, precision, and footwork, Stevenson immediately established dominance, dictating the pace and keeping Padley at a distance. Padley tried to engage, but he found himself consistently outclassed by Stevenson’s sharp combinations and movement.

In the second round, Stevenson’s power came into full display as he dropped Padley for the first time with a crisp, straight left hand that sent Padley crashing to the canvas. Padley managed to get back to his feet, but Stevenson sensed blood and continued to press forward.

The Knockdowns:

The second knockdown came in the following round, when Stevenson landed a lightning-quick combination that once again floored Padley. The challenger, clearly dazed, struggled to keep up with Stevenson’s speed and accuracy. Stevenson’s punches were landing with devastating precision, and Padley’s efforts to survive seemed increasingly futile.

The final knockdown came in the fourth round. Stevenson’s relentless pressure overwhelmed Padley, who couldn’t withstand the barrage of punches any longer. Another clean shot sent Padley down for the third and final time, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight. The TKO victory was declared, and Stevenson retained his title in commanding fashion.

Stevenson’s Dominance:

The fight was a display of Shakur Stevenson’s undeniable talent and ability to adapt, even with a last-minute opponent change. His quickness, power, and ring generalship left no doubt that he remains one of the most skilled fighters in the division. Stevenson’s ability to methodically break down his opponents with both technical brilliance and power continues to impress fans and analysts alike.

Fans are eager to see what’s next for the champion, with potential matchups against other top contenders or even unifications on the horizon. Josh Padley’s Future:

For Josh Padley, stepping in on short notice against a fighter of Stevenson’s caliber was always going to be an uphill battle. Despite the loss, Padley’s bravery and willingness to fight at the highest level have earned him respect. Moving forward, Padley will have the opportunity to regroup, take on more fights, and build back from this experience.

The Legacy of the Fight:

Shakur Stevenson’s performance reaffirmed his place as one of boxing’s brightest stars. The way he handled the late-replacement opponent with such precision and power will only add to his growing legacy. WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson is weeks away from his highly anticipated bout against rising star Floyd Schofield Jr. The bout is scheduled to unfold on the undercard of the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol rematch in Saudi Arabia. In the meantime, the Newark native has been accused of being a coward by Gervonta Davis’ team.

You see, ‘Sugar’ Stevenson has been asking for a fight against ‘Tank’ Davis for quite some time now. However, all he has received in return are insults. With Stevenson’s next fight on the doorstep, Davis’ co-trainer coach Kenny Ellis has accused Stevenson of being the one who is ducking a fight against Davis.

Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, will lock horns with WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1st in Brooklyn, a fight that has received backlash as the Baltimore native chose to fight someone from a lower weight class. Regardless, while appearing in an interview with Mill City Boxing recently, Ellis suggested Stevenson would use hand injury as an excuse to avoid fighting ‘Tank.’

For context, in October last year, Stevenson was scheduled to face Joe Cordina on the undercard of Beterbiev-Bivol. However, due to a hand injury, Stevenson had to pull out of the fight. Reports later revealed that Stevenson had to undergo surgery to fix the issue with his hand. In a recent interview with Matchroom Boxing, Stevenson claimed that his hand is much better now and shouldn’t cause any issues during or before the Schofield bout.

Regardless, Ellis feels the injury will come back after the Schofield bout. “Shakur will win his next fight,” Ellis told Mill City Boxing. “But he is gonna hurt his hands. Even if his hand ain’t hurt, it’s going to be hurt.” As to why this will happen, Ellis claimed, “That’s what you do when you trying to buy time.”

It’s also worth noting that ‘Tank’ Davis has previously revealed that he will retire after 2025. With the Roach fight in March, and Davis fighting twice a year, there’s only one fight left for ‘Tank’ if he sticks to his retirement claims. In contrast to Ennis’ claims about Stevenson, however, the WBC lightweight title holder sees a potential fight between them as a legacy-defining fight.

Shakur Stevenson isn’t buying the narrative that he’s the only one who needs a fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. While many believe Stevenson is chasing Davis, the reigning WBC lightweight champion sees it differently. In his eyes, their potential showdown is just as important for Davis’ legacy as it is for his own.

“Me and ‘Tank’ is the legacy-defining fight for each other,” Stevenson told Eze Talks Sports last month during the February 22nd Saudi card press conference. “A lot of people try to make it seem like I need him. But honestly, he needs me just as much as I need him.” However, before Stevenson can even dream of fighting Davis, he must make a statement finish against Schofield Jr.

And Stevenson’s attitude suggests he is planning to do exactly that. “There’s gonna be a lot of big fights but I gotta focus on the task in front of me,” Stevenson said. “Then we can talk about the next guy and the guys after that.”

Having said that, it appears coach Kenny Ellis is under the impression that Shakur Stevenson is ducking Gervonta Davis. However, from the outside looking in, it seems like the Davis fight is Stevenson’s ultimate goal. But you be the judge of who is ducking who. Regardless, if they were to fight, who do you think would win?
