Claressa Shields has made more history in women’s boxing by becoming the undisputed heavyweight world champion; Shields’ promoter reveals the American star is willing to rematch her rival Savannah Marshall in that division, but that must take place in the US or on neutral territory.

Claressa Shields is open to a rematch with her great rival Savannah Marshall in the heavyweight division.

Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, defeated Danielle Perkins to become the first undisputed heavyweight world champion in women’s boxing.

“We’ve had general discussions over the past several months and have expressed our interest in making the rematch happen,” Dmitry Salita, Shields’ promoter, told Sky Sports.”The fight against Perkins was a battle of size and strength versus skill and boxing IQ. Claressa’s skills in the ring are like a Picasso masterpiece – timeless, precise, and unmatched.”

Shields won her title fight with Marshall on points. But she dropped Perkins heavily in their final round and Salita says the American would knock Marshall out in a heavyweight contest.

Claressa Shields (16-0; 3 KOs) became the undisputed women’s heavyweight champion after defeating Danielle Perkins (5-1; 0) by unanimous decision (100-89, 99-90, 97-92) in her hometown of Flint, Michigan. Although the size difference was evident, the experience of the two-time Olympic champion and the age difference (29 to 42) was more decisive.

In any case, Shields, who proclaimed herself the ‘GWOAT’ (Greatest Woman of All Time), made history by becoming the first female boxer to be crowned undisputed champion in a third weight category. Since there are four belts, in men there are three fighters who have been in two divisions: Oleksandr Usyk, Naoya Inoue and Terence Crawford. Among the girls, Katie Taylor has ruled in two weights.

From the start, it was clear that Shields was going to take advantage of her speed. She is tough and was ready to get in and out quickly. The second round was really entertaining, as Perkins realized that her opponent was extremely effective, so in the final seconds she went all out despite the risks. In the third round there was again a lot of dynamite.

Claressa continued to dominate and even attack with the jab. In the seventh, adrenaline levels rose again. Although the result did not seem to be in danger if it went to the end, the contest remained interesting because Perkins threw punches with a lot of bad temper. However, Shields shone in the ninth and in the tenth she sent her opponent to the canvas just before the end. If there is one thing about women’s 10×2, it is that the fights are very intense.

According to the champion, she fought very depleted: “I think I’m going to have to have surgery on my left arm. I tore my labrum last week, so the fight almost didn’t happen. I didn’t want to disappoint my city, but I really couldn’t use my jab the way I wanted to,” she said.

His triumph comes just as a biographical film about his early years in boxing, entitled ‘The Fire Inside’ has been released

Papoose popped out for Claressa Shields ahead of her impressive boxing victory, performing her walkout music. Shield’s heavyweight bout went down on Sunday (Feb. 2) against Danielle Perkins at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan. But before fans were treated to a dominating performance from Claressa, they were rewarded with a glimpse into Pap’s love for his new boo.

During Shield’s walkout, the couple appeared side by side, as Pap performed his timeless verse from Busta Rhymes’ 2006 hit, “Touch It.” While the WBC athlete appeared locked in, she couldn’t help but smile and look on lovingly as Pap easily ripped through his memorable lines.

“Five boroughs of death, you don’t understand, I got New York City in the palm of my hand/ Now I could make a tight fist and let it crumble ridiculous/ Or I could smack the world with a New York Nemesis/ I got Staten Island on my pinky, Queens on my thumb, dude, The Bronx on my middle finger screamin’ f**k you/ Rock ice in Manhattan so there’s the ring finger/ You know I had to keep Brooklyn on the trigger finger,” he rapped with the crowd and Shields fully engaged. But then, it was showtime.

Shields, who was battling an injured shoulder, and Perkins’ bout went 10 rounds before the “GWOAT” dropped Danielle with a vicious right hook. The unanimously decided win gave the 29-year-old the undisputed heavyweight title, making her the first boxer, regardless of gender, “in the four-belt era to become the undisputed champion in three different weight classes,” per ESPN.

“I felt strong in there, but I know Danielle Perkins felt stronger. That girl was strong as hell,” Shields said, detailing how she had found a way to win. “She was strong, she was definitely a problem. My experience and my skills got me over it and also, I’ve been in plenty of street fights with bigger people and I had to use some of my skills in that today, too. So, when I dropped her in the last round, it’s because she got greedy.”

The “GWOAT” defeated Danielle Perkins by unanimous decision to become boxing’s first-ever women’s undisputed heavyweight champion. She also earned the accolade of being the only three-division undisputed champion, male or female, of the four-belt era.

Shields (16-0, 3 KOs) is known for her strong jab, but that was nonexistent on Sunday night at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan. She explained in her post-fight interview that she was unable to use her jab because she tore a labrum in her left shoulder just nine days prior to fight night.

Shields, Uncrowned’s No. 1 pound-for-pound women’s boxer in the world, instead focused her efforts on landing the straight right hand and overhand right on the southpaw Perkins, which she did consistently throughout the fight. She hurt Perkins for the first time in Round 3 with an overhand right and almost secured an early knockout, but Perkins managed to stand up to the assault that followed.

In Round 7, a straight right hand buzzed Perkins heavily, and Shields once again looked for a finish that didn’t come. To her credit, Perkins became more aggressive in the final three rounds, looking to get her own work off on Shields.

With around 10 seconds to go in the 10th and final round, Perkins threw a slow left hand, which Shields slipped and countered with a sharp right, flooring Perkins. There wasn’t any time left for Shields to look for the finish as the final bell rang just after the referee signaled for the action to resume.

Shields was awarded every round on one scorecard, 100-89, nine rounds on a second scorecard, 99-90, and seven rounds on the third card, 97-92. She said in her post-fight interview that she wished to box two more times in 2025, naming a list of potential opponents, which included Franchon Crews-Dezurn, Hanna Gabriels, Savannah Marshall, MMA legend Cris Cyborg and retired trailblazer Laila Ali.

Speaking after the fight, Shields said: “Danielle was strong, she was definitely a problem, but my experience and my skills got me over it.

“I’ve been in plenty of street fights with bigger people, and I had to use some of my skills in that [against Perkins], too. So, when I dropped her in the last round, it’s because she got greedy.

“I actually think I’m going to have to have surgery on my left arm. I tore my labrum last week, so the fight almost didn’t happen. I didn’t want to let Flint down, but I really couldn’t use my jab the way that I wanted to.

“I iced it, I did therapy, and now I think I’m going to have a shoulder surgery.”

Shields’s victory comes just days before the UK release of The Fire Inside, a biopic about the early years of her boxing career – including her Olympic gold-medal triumph in 2012, which was followed by another in 2016.

The film, directed by Rachel Morrison and starring Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry, was released in the US in December. Its UK release date is 7 February.

Super Fight Sunday fight updates

Joshua James Pagan beats Ronal Ron by unanimous decision

Ron and Pagan were not interested in protecting themselves. Both willingly took on shots from the other to open up windows to wind up, resulting in each landing and absorbing big shots. Ron opened Pagan in the second round above his left eye, but kept working to get as close to Ron as possible to try and land tight hooks and uppercuts. His attack was unrelenting over eight rounds, and eventually, he turned it from a back-and-forth affair to one he dictated in the later rounds to win by unanimous decision (79-73, 78-74, 78-74) to remain undefeated. The two kept swinging until the end and spent the last 20 seconds wildly trading hooks to the delight of the relatively full Dort Financial Center crowd.

Caroline Veyre wins WBA intercontinental featherweight title

Veyre started on the front foot and peppered Vargas with pressure. Veyre left Vargas with a visibly swollen left eye and then opened her up and made her bleed with a jab to the nose in the third round. Despite taking control, Veyre couldn’t get a finish, instead comfortably avoiding damage to walk away with a unanimous 80-72 decision in the eight-round fight.

Ashleyann Lozada wins in pro debut

Lozada, “La Maquina”, dominated across the four-round fight against Moran for the first win of her professional career. Lozada danced around Moran and dared her with her guard down, but the Puerto Rican was too fast for Moran and buried her with flurries of counters.

Taylor, Worthington, Lawson III win first three fights

In the first fight, Pryce Taylor knocked out Jerrell Nettles for a second-round finish at heavyweight with a right cross. Samantha Worthington outlasted Vaida Masiokaite in an eight-round unanimous decision at super lightweight (77-75, 78-64, 79-73). Flint’s Leon Lawson III drew the biggest cheer of the early fights with a fourth-round finish against Christopher Thompson for a technical knockout. The referee stopped the fight after Lawson wobbled Thompson early in the fourth round for his second stoppage. The fight between Flint’s Jaquan McElroy and Macomb’s Joseph Jerome Starks, the original first fight, did not happen.

What’s at stake for Claressa Shields-Danielle Perkins

This fight is for the first-ever undisputed women’s heavyweight title in boxing history, and a chance for an American, male or female, to become the undisputed champion at the top weight class since 1992.

Shields is looking to become the first boxer regardless of gender to win undisputed titles in three weight classes — 154, 160 and 175. She became the first boxer to win two undisputed titles after her last fight in Flint at the Dort Financial Center in 2021.

Both fighters have undefeated records. Shields is looking to cement her status as the greatest women’s boxer of all time, while Perkins is looking for her first title as a professional.
