Floyd Mayweather Jr. Demands Alleged Vegas Assault Victim Pay His Legal Costs.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is pushing back against a lawsuit that accuses him of orchestrating an attack on a man who filmed him jogging in Las Vegas. The boxing legend, 47, has denied all allegations and is now asking a judge to dismiss the case—and make the alleged victim pay his legal fees.
Mayweather Denies All Allegations
According to court documents obtained by Lawyer Monthly, Mayweather has asked a Las Vegas judge to throw out the claims made by William Rodriguez-Mercado. The lawsuit, filed in July 2024, alleges that Mayweather instructed members of his entourage to assault Rodriguez-Mercado for filming him in the early hours of May 31, 2023.
Mayweather, however, denies any wrongdoing. His legal team argues that any injuries William sustained were due to his own negligence or actions beyond Mayweather’s control.
What Happened That Night?
Rodriguez-Mercado claims that on May 31, 2023, he spotted Mayweather jogging with a woman on a Las Vegas sidewalk. Recognizing the boxing icon, he stopped to watch.
As Mayweather and his companion approached, Rodriguez-Mercado began filming. He alleges that Mayweather became enraged and ordered his entourage, who were following in SUVs, to seize his phone.
The lawsuit states:
“[Floyd], upon realizing that he was being filmed, became enraged and immediately confronted [William]. [Floyd] yelled to the occupants of the SUVs that, ‘HE’S FILMING. TAKE HIS F–KING PHONE. GET HIM.’”
Rodriguez-Mercado claims that multiple men rushed him. One allegedly said, “Nobody ever rushes the champ like that.”
Brutal Attack and Death Threats Alleged
According to the lawsuit, Rodriguez-Mercado was struck in the face and knocked unconscious. He does not recall how long the attack lasted but says Mayweather watched before fleeing.
The alleged victim also claims that after the assault, Mayweather’s team took his phone and continued driving while he lay on the ground. Once he regained consciousness, he realized he was bleeding. Moments later, he alleges that a car pulled up and he was told to get in—or he would be killed.
Fearing for his life, Rodriguez-Mercado says he ran to a nearby 7-Eleven and called the police, but officers never arrived. He alleges that the car continued circling the area before eventually leaving.
Severe Injuries and Lasting Impact
Rodriguez-Mercado claims he suffered serious injuries to his head, face, limbs, and organs, some of which may be permanent. He also alleges that the attack has led to:
- Medical expenses
- Loss of wages and earning capacity
- Physical impairment
- Mental anguish
- Loss of enjoyment of life
The lawsuit seeks damages for these losses.
Mayweather’s Legal Response: Dismissal & Attorney Fees
Mayweather’s legal team is not only demanding the case be dismissed but is also pushing for Rodriguez-Mercado to cover Mayweather’s legal expenses. This move suggests a strong stance against the claims, reinforcing Mayweather’s argument that he played no role in the alleged attack.
Another Lawsuit Against Mayweather
This is not the only legal battle Mayweather is facing. He is also being sued by Eduardo Andres Torres Martinez, who claims that Mayweather ordered an attack on him at Yard House in L.A. Live on February 10, 2022. According to Torres Martinez, he began filming Mayweather at the restaurant, which allegedly led to Mayweather instructing his bodyguard to assault him.
Mayweather has denied all allegations in both cases.
